Slot Machine Habits

A slot is an opening or position into which something can be inserted. Usually, slots are found in arcades, amusement parks and casinos. They contain a combination of mechanical and electronic parts. They use the fundamentals of probability to beguile players and create a profit for their owners. A slot machine is an example of an engineering marvel, a masterful display of mathematical deceit and psychological manipulation.

While the etiology of habit formation is a subject of debate, many research studies have demonstrated that slot machines are influenced by habits. These behaviors are not formally specified by the research community, but may encompass both acquisition-type behavior (e.g., choosing which slot machine to play in a casino) and behaviors that occur during gambling sessions (e.g., the speed at which bets are made). This study provides evidence that habits do exist in slot-machine gambling and opens several doors for future investigations of habit formation in this context. For instance, it is important to investigate changes in other potential markers of habit expression during gambling sessions, and to cross-reference these behavioral trends against domain-general measures of habit formation (e.g., the Pavlovian-to-Instrumental Transfer effect). Moreover, our data suggest that PRPs and force, measures of reward reactivity as a function of win size, are more predictive of positive affect than dark flow, despite their lack of correlation with negative gambling attitudes. These results support the hypothesis that the enjoyment experienced by slots players is primarily attributable to the attention-capturing, intermittent rewards they receive from the game.
