How to Play Poker

Unlike most games of chance, poker is a game of skill. In order to be successful at this game, you must be able to read your opponents and predict the odds of each situation. You must also be able to get chips from your opponents, and maintain a cool demeanor when making bluffs.

When playing poker, each player is dealt five cards, two of which are face up, and the other four are face down. The dealer is the last player to shuffle the deck. The dealer is responsible for giving the last card to the opposing player, who must then offer it back to the dealer.

The aim of the game is to have the highest-ranking hand of cards. The winning hand is determined by the highest card, and the highest unmatched fifth card breaks ties. For example, if three people have the highest king, and an ace, the king breaks a tie. The player with the higher-ranking hand wins the pot.

Once the cards have been distributed, players begin to make bets. This betting is done in a clockwise manner. If all the remaining players call, the action moves on to the next round. If none of the players call, the action continues until everyone has folded.

At the end of each round, a “showdown” occurs. The active player shows his or her entire hand to the other players. If no one shows, the player who has the best hand wins the pot.
