Learn the Basics of Poker

Poker

Poker is a game of chance and risk, where players bet chips and either win or lose them. It has dozens of variations but the basic mechanics are usually the same. It requires a lot of attention to detail and understanding of the game’s rules and betting concepts.

Depending on the variant of poker being played, one or more players are required to place forced bets before they’re dealt cards. These bets are called antes and blinds and can come in various forms. Once the forced bets are placed, the dealer shuffles and cuts the deck. Players then each receive their two personal cards, and the community cards are revealed. Each player then has the option to bet, put chips into the pot that their opponents must match or raise, or fold their hand.

If you have a strong poker hand, bet aggressively to put maximum pressure on your opponent/s. You can also bet based on your opponent’s tells (eye movements, idiosyncrasies, hand gestures, betting behavior etc). A player who frequently calls and then unexpectedly makes a huge raise may be holding an amazing hand!

Depending on your position at the table, you might want to open up your poker hand range and play more hands. However, starting out conservatively and at a lower stake will allow you to learn the game and observe your opponent/s. You’ll also be able to improve your understanding of poker fundamentals and build confidence.
