Slots – Organizing Your Team

Slot

The slot is a term used to describe the area between the face-off circles in an offensive zone. This is usually taken up by a wide receiver, but can also be used by a quarterback or a tight end.

Slot receivers are also known as slotbacks. These players line up slightly behind the line of scrimmage, and are used to block defenders and to protect the quarterback. They can also serve as the recipient of a handoff.

Slot receivers can be used to create mismatches downfield. For example, if a DB breaks through the line of scrimmage, a slot receiver can pick up the ball and prevent the quarterback from getting sacked. However, a defense using slot receivers may have to re-organize their formations in order to keep a DB from breaking through.

A slot receiver is also used as a checkdown for the quarterback. In addition, they can create mismatches downfield by lining up on either side of the offensive line. Lineups can range from two receivers to as many as three.

Often, a defense will use an extra defensive back to cover the DB lines in the slot. Similarly, a slot corner will need to play off-man in order to be effective.

Using slots is a great way to organize your team and to ensure that they are working towards your goals. Whether you are organizing a presentation with a manager, or are preparing for a meeting with your staff, you can use this method to make sure everyone is on the same page.
