While there is no clear proof that the game originated from these games, it is likely that it is closely related to the Persian game of as nas. Persian sailors may have taught it to French settlers in New Orleans. Various origin theories exist, but generally poker is believed to be of Renaissance origins. It shares some elements with the French game primero and the English game brelan. The English game brag is clearly derived from brelan and includes bluffing as a component.
Almost all poker games require poker chips. A set number of poker chips is required for any game with seven or more players. In most cases, the lowest chip is white. A red chip is worth five whites, while a blue chip is worth two, four, or five reds. Players “buy in” to the game by purchasing chips worth the same amount. In a game with multiple players, the pot size should be large enough to hold the total bets made by the players.
A bluff is a bet that the player makes voluntarily to try to outsmart another player. This strategy is known as a forced bet, and occurs in three forms: antes, blinds, and bring-ins. The player who is the first to bet must bet the minimum amount in the first betting interval. After the betting interval, the next bettor may check his bet. In subsequent betting intervals, the player may check or raise his or her hand.
