A narrow notch or groove, especially one for receiving a coin in a machine. Also: A position or place in a group, sequence, etc. (American Heritage Dictionary)
Slot is an electronic gambling machine that accepts paper tickets with barcodes or cash, and pays out credits according to a preset paytable. The symbols on a slot machine vary depending on the theme, but classic symbols include fruit, bells, and stylized lucky sevens. In addition, many slot games have a bonus feature aligned with the theme. A player activates the game by pressing a lever or button (either physical or on a touchscreen), which causes the reels to spin and rearrange the symbols. The machine then calculates a payout based on the combinations of symbols and other factors, such as a multiplier for multiple coins played or the number of consecutive wins. In the early days of slot machines, morality and the clergy frequently opposed them, as did city governments, which banned them from saloons and dance halls. After San Francisco cracked down, Fey relocated his factories and introduced a version that didn’t require the inserting of coins. This was a major milestone, and allowed him to introduce video slots that replicated traditional mechanical machines on a monitor. These were more popular than the electromechanical models, and became the mainstay of casinos. These machines are still popular in casinos today, both live and online. However, the allure of slots can cause serious problems for some gamblers, including mounting financial debt and difficulties with relationships and careers.
